RIDB-1c-1954D-01 Retained Interior Die Break
Error
Description
Following the trio of 1953-D retained interior die breaks, RIDB-1c-1954D-01 documents the same error type on the subsequent year's Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent — raising the possibility that conditions contributing to interior die failures at Denver persisted into 1954. A retained interior die break occurs when a section of the die face fractures loose but remains caught in its recess, striking coins with a raised irregular area in the interior field rather than at the rim. This interior placement distinguishes RIDBs from cuds and makes them considerably scarcer, as the central zone is structurally more resistant to fracture than the thin rim edge. Denver struck 251.552 million Lincoln Wheat Cents in 1954, a significant reduction from the previous year's 700.515 million — yet interior breaks continued, suggesting the root cause was not solely volume-driven. Die steel composition, heat treatment protocols, or hub design characteristics could all contribute independently of production quantity. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this 1954-D entry extends Denver's early-1950s RIDB sequence.
