1954-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched D mintmark where the punch was applied at slightly different positions. Die markers UVC-509 / DMR-004 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with obverse and reverse at MDS; Stage C with obverse and reverse at LDS; Stage D with obverse at VLDS and a die chip on T of CENT at LDS. The four-stage progression from EDS through VLDS indicates this die pair remained in service far longer than the typical three-stage lifecycle. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1954-D was produced at Denver during the final years of Victor David Brenner's iconic wheat ears reverse, which would be replaced by the Memorial design in 1959.
