Description

San Francisco cuds on Lincoln Wheat Cents are notably less common than their Denver counterparts, and CU-1C-1953S-02 represents one of the scarcer mint-facility entries in the Cuds on Coins catalog. The San Francisco Mint struck far fewer cents than Denver during the 1950s, which means fewer working dies were consumed and fewer opportunities existed for rim failures to occur and be preserved. The "-02" suffix tells us that at least one other cud position has been documented for the 1953-S date, but the overall count remains modest compared to Denver's multi-cud clusters. What makes any S-mint cud especially interesting to error collectors is the intersection of two scarcity factors: the lower mintage of the host coin and the uncommon occurrence of a major die break at a facility running fewer presses. San Francisco's role in cent production would diminish further in the late 1950s, and by 1955 the mint stopped striking cents entirely for several years. This 1953-S cud comes from the tail end of sustained San Francisco cent coinage, a period when the facility still maintained regular production but at volumes that make documented die errors genuinely difficult to locate.
