RCD-1c-1953S-03R Retained Cud

Description

Only two years before San Francisco would strike its last Lincoln Wheat Cents, the die documented as RCD-1c-1953S-03R by Cuds on Coins produced this retained cud on the 1953-S issue. The penultimate decade of S-mint cent production gives these coins a bittersweet quality for series specialists: each represents a facility approaching the end of an era stretching back to the cent's 1909 debut. Struck from the post-war alloy of 95% copper and 5% zinc, the 1953-S cent carried forward the recycled-brass-derived composition introduced during wartime. A retained cud develops when accumulated stress causes a die to crack from an interior point out to the rim, and the freed segment remains mechanically trapped rather than ejecting. The coin then receives a raised, shapeless deposit over part of its design — a permanent record of structural failure. Multiple retained cuds are documented for the 1953-S date, with this third variety indicating that die breakage was a recurring pattern across several die pairs. Collectors of late-date San Francisco Wheat Cents find these retained cuds compelling because the limited remaining production window makes each variety scarce and historically resonant.
