Description

First cataloged reverse retained cud for the 1953-S Lincoln Wheat Cent, RCD-1c-1953S-01R documents a San Francisco Mint die that developed a rim-area fragment which cracked free yet remained in place during striking. As the inaugural entry in the 1953-S retained cud catalog, this variety establishes the baseline documentation for die rim failures on this date-mint combination. San Francisco's cent production in 1953 was modest compared to Philadelphia and Denver, which can make die varieties from S-mint Wheat Cents scarcer in absolute terms despite the mint's lower total output. A retained cud differs from a pre-cud in that the fragment has fully separated along the crack boundary but physical forces — compression from the collar or simple friction — keep it from dislodging during the striking cycle.
