Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent carries the 24th cataloged repunched S mintmark for the 1953-S date. Die markers UVC-505 / DMR-030 track four progressive die states: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with two light die cracks in hair at MDS, a light die crack northeast across shoulder, and reverse at MDS; Stage C with three die cracks on forehead at LDS, three die cracks in hair, a stronger die crack northeast across shoulder, and reverse at LDS; Stage D with a die break on forehead at LDS and reverse at LDS. The escalation from light cracks to a full die break on the forehead documents terminal structural failure. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1953-S was produced in the later years of Brenner's wheat ears reverse.
