1953-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-020

Description

Notable for documenting a reverse die change mid-production, this VarietyVista-recorded 1953-S Lincoln Wheat Cent carries the 20th cataloged repunched mintmark for the date. Die markers span two pairings: UVC-501 / DMR-026 covers Stage A with circular die gouges around rim and on the head at EDS, a die gouge dot above E of LIBERTY, a light die crack in right wheat grains at LDS, and die chips on T of CENT. Stage B shows circular die gouges almost worn away at MDS with reverse at LDS. Then UVC-3492 / DMR-042 covers Stage C with obverse at LDS and reverse die changed to EDS. The reverse jumping from LDS back to fresh EDS confirms mid-production die replacement while the RPM obverse continued service. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1953-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint.
