1953-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Leading the RPM catalog for the 1953-S date, this Wheat Cent was documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-477 / DMR-002. The die life progression spans four condition states with a progressively extending reverse die crack. Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed). Stage B at MDS with a die crack developing in the right wheat grains. Stage C advances to the obverse at LDS with a longer die crack in the right wheat grains reaching VLDS, documenting the fracture's growth well past normal retirement. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1953, this represents the penultimate year of San Francisco cent production before the facility ceased one-cent striking after 1955. As RPM-001, this variety was likely either the first discovered or the most visually prominent repunched mintmark for the issue.
