Description

One of the most recently documented die failures in the wheat cent series, the RCD-1c-1953-03R was added to the Cuds on Coins database on October 31, 2024, as a retained cud variety on the 1953 Lincoln wheat cent. A retained cud develops when a die rim section fractures but the broken fragment maintains its position rather than falling free, producing a raised area on struck coins where the displaced die segment creates partial design impressions shifted from their normal alignment. Philadelphia struck approximately 256.9 million cents in 1953, a substantial postwar production volume that kept working dies under intensive use. The 1953 Lincoln wheat cent was in the penultimate era of its design life — just six years before the 1959 transition to Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse — and the dies used in this period had benefited from decades of refinement in die steel composition and manufacturing technique.
