Third documented die chip for the 1953 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, this variety joins DC-1c-1953-04 in documenting die surface failures for this post-war date. A die chip forms when a small fragment of die steel fractures and separates from the die face under the repetitive mechanical stress of high-speed striking, and the resulting void fills with metal during the striking process to produce a small raised bump on the finished coin.
