Description

Documented by the Wexler Team as 1953-D 10-cent WRPM-007 and submitted by Scott Rusch, this Roosevelt Dime variety features a D/D repunched mintmark in a tilted (rotated) position. The D over D designation means the Denver mintmark was punched into the working die at least twice, with the second impression landing at a rotated angle relative to the first, leaving traces of the initial tilted punch visible beneath or alongside the final position. During this era, mintmarks were hand-punched into individual working dies by Mint employees, making slight positional variations between punches inevitable — tilted repunched mintmarks are among the more visually distinctive RPM types because the angular offset between impressions creates a rotational ghost image rather than a simple lateral shift. The 1953-D Roosevelt Dime was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver at 2.5 grams on John R. Sinnock's design. No other cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are known. Examination under 10x or higher magnification should focus on the D mintmark on the reverse, looking for traces of an earlier, slightly rotated punch impression beneath the final mintmark position.
