Description

A counterclockwise rotation of the secondary D mintmark impression distinguishes this 1953-D Roosevelt Dime variety from the more commonly seen north, south, or cardinal-direction repunches cataloged in the same series. Designated D/D Rotated CCW, RPM-006 shows the earlier punch impression rotated relative to the final primary D, a result of the die being repositioned slightly between punch applications during mintmark entry. Die markers are cross-referenced as UVC-243 and DMR-007. Stage A was early die state (unconfirmed). Stage B brought both reverse and obverse to mid-die state. Stage C on the reverse reached late die state with a significant die crack running from the bust to the rim through the designer's initials — the JS monogram of John Sinnock, placed at the truncation of Roosevelt's neck. This late-stage die crack through the designer's initials is a common terminus marker for Roosevelt Dime reverse dies in this era. The 1953-D Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver at Denver, the same composition used for all Roosevelt Dimes through 1964. Variety attributed by VarietyVista.
