1953-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-029

Description

Showing a D/D West repunching direction, RPM-029 on the 1953-D Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent is cataloged by VarietyVista (UVC-1141, DMR-033). The mint mark was punched a second time with the initial impression visible to the west of the final position. Three die stages are documented. Stage A is early die state, though this remains unconfirmed. Stage B is mid-die state, also unconfirmed. Stage C reaches late die state, identifiable by a light die crack developing over the V.D.B. designer's initials on the obverse, with the reverse also showing late die state characteristics. The D/D West direction of the repunching indicates the first punch landed slightly to the west before the corrected second impression was made, leaving a shadow of the initial D visible beside the final position. Victor David Brenner's bronze Lincoln Wheat Cent was nearing the end of its production run by 1953, with only five years remaining before the Memorial reverse replaced the wheat ears in 1959. Twenty-nine documented RPMs for the 1953-D date reflects the enormous Denver Mint output and the systematic attention die variety researchers have devoted to late-era wheat cents.
