Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent features a four-stage progression where light die cracks at MDS escalate to die breaks by VLDS. Die markers UVC-458 / DMR-008: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with very light die crack on forehead at MDS and very light die crack on T of CENT at MDS; Stage C with die clash at throat and behind neck at LDS and light die scratches east-west on reverse at LDS; Stage D with die break in hair above ear at VLDS, light die crack on forehead, and die break on T of CENT at VLDS. The forehead crack persisting from MDS through VLDS while the T of CENT progresses from crack to break documents how sustained pressure converts stress fractures into metal displacement. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the die clash at Stage C confirms the dies struck each other without a planchet.
