1953-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint 1953-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-004 features a reverse die change at Stage D that resets the reverse condition from VLDS back to EDS. Die markers span two pairings: UVC-455 / DMR-005 with Stage A at obverse EDS and light die crack in right wheat to rim at MDS; Stage B with light die crack over V.D.B. at MDS and die chip on T of CENT at LDS; Stage C with die crack on forehead at LDS, longer die crack over V.D.B., and reverse at VLDS. UVC-456 / DMR-006: Stage D with obverse at LDS and reverse die changed at EDS; Stage E with stronger die crack on forehead at VLDS, die crack in hair, and die chip in upper left wheat grains at MDS. The jump from reverse VLDS at Stage C to reverse EDS at Stage D proves the worn reverse was replaced while the RPM obverse continued striking. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, struck at Denver with its mid-century cent production.
