RCD-1c-1952S-02R Retained Cud

Description

San Francisco's 1952-S Lincoln Wheat Cent production generated this reverse retained cud, the second documented for the date and cross-referenced as JCc-52S_64 in the Jim Caldwell catalog. RCD-1c-1952S-02R records a die fracture along the rim area of the reverse where the broken piece remained in place rather than dropping away, creating a raised or weakly impressed zone on struck coins retaining partial design detail. The relatively high Caldwell number of 64 for only the second cataloged retained cud suggests extensive die variety documentation for 1952-S cents, with retained cuds representing a small subset of total cataloged varieties. San Francisco cent production in the early 1950s was dwarfed by Philadelphia and Denver output, giving S-mint Wheat Cents from this period lower mintages and greater collector interest. The "R" suffix identifies the reverse as the affected side. Retained cuds from lower-mintage branch mints are less frequently encountered than Philadelphia counterparts.
