1952-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

This San Francisco Lincoln wheat cent carries a repunched mintmark cataloged by VarietyVista as RPM-007 under UVC-440 and DMR-009. The S was punched at least twice, leaving traces of the initial impression beneath the final position. Three die states are documented. Stage A remains unconfirmed. Stage B at mid die state introduces north-south die scratches on the obverse, two die gouges behind the bust near the rim, and a die chip in the left wheat lines progressing toward late die state. By Stage C, the obverse scratches have weakened and a die chip has formed on the T of CENT at very late die state. The progressive deterioration from strong scratches in Stage B to near-disappearance in Stage C provides a useful framework for sequencing specimens. Repunched mintmarks on late-date wheat cents are commonly encountered by roll searchers, though RPM-007 requires careful examination to distinguish from neighboring listings in the 1952-S series.
