RIDB-1c-1952-01 Retained Interior Die Break

Description

Unlike rim cuds where a die fragment breaks away at the edge, a retained interior die break occurs when a section of the die within the design area cracks and partially separates but remains held in position — continuing to strike coins with a distinctive raised outline of the broken area. RIDB-1c-1952-01 documents the first cataloged retained interior die break on the 1952 Lincoln Wheat Cent, part of the series' final decade before the transition to the Memorial reverse in 1959. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, retained interior breaks are less commonly reported than rim breaks because interior die sections are better supported by surrounding metal and require greater stress concentrations to fracture. When they do occur, the resulting coins display a raised irregular outline where the crack separates the broken section from the surrounding die face, often enclosing a portion of the design that may show slight displacement from the break's movement.
