Description

Accompanied by an obverse die chip on the date, this tenth documented retained cud for the 1952 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits two distinct types of die deterioration on the same coin. The die chip on the date is a separate defect from the retained cud, and the presence of both suggests a die in an advanced stage of wear. Retained cuds form when a section of the die rim cracks but the broken piece does not separate, remaining in place with slight displacement and producing a visible crack line rather than the raised featureless mass of a full cud. Die chips, by contrast, are smaller areas where tiny fragments of the die surface have broken away, creating small raised spots on the struck coin. When these two defect types appear together, the coin becomes a more complete record of die deterioration. The 1952 Wheat Cent was produced during the post-war boom period, with Philadelphia striking substantial quantities. Ten retained cuds for a single date indicates a well-studied population. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this variety rewards close examination for both the rim break and the die chip near the date.
