Description

Documented by VarietyVista, the 1952-D RPM-025 Lincoln Wheat Cent presents a D/D/D South, South triple-punched mintmark — a three-impression variety where all three D applications share a southward displacement direction, with each successive punch placed slightly further south than the previous, creating a stacked vertical cascade of overlapping D remnants extending downward from the primary impression. Die markers UVC-1166 / DMR-029 track three stages: Stage A at EDS with several curving die scratches visible through GOD WE on the obverse while the reverse is also at EDS — these curving die scratches, present from the earliest documented strikes, suggest they were introduced during die preparation rather than from production wear, and their curved trajectories through the motto letters indicate a rotational or sweeping tool contact rather than linear polishing; Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); and Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The D/D/D South, South triple repunch with consistent southward displacement on both the secondary and tertiary impressions is diagnostically distinctive because the three D impressions stack vertically, with progressively more of the earlier impressions' upper serifs and curves visible above the final D placement. The Lincoln Wheat Cent was designed by Victor David Brenner for the obverse, struck at the Denver Mint in 1952 in the standard bronze composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Triple repunched mintmarks with consistent directional displacement create cleaner diagnostic patterns than multi-directional triples because the three impressions align along a single axis, making the stacked remnants more visually coherent and potentially easier to attribute under magnification.
