1952-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-017
Error
Description
Showing a D/D rotated clockwise, RPM-017 for the 1952 Denver Lincoln Wheat Cent displays the initial D mint mark punch applied with a slight clockwise rotation relative to the final corrective impression. Rotated repunches differ from the more common directional shifts (north, south, east, west) in that the second punch was correctly centered but angularly misaligned — the die worker rotated the punch tool between impressions rather than shifting its position. This rotational displacement produces a distinctive doubled outline where one edge of the D appears wider while the opposite edge shows separation. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die tracking codes UVC-428 and DMR-019, the variety is documented in two die states. Stage A represents early die state (unconfirmed). Stage B records mid-die state (unconfirmed). Struck in the bronze composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc that defined the Lincoln Wheat Cent throughout its 1909-1958 production span, the 1952-D bears Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait. Seventeen documented RPMs for the 1952-D date reflect Denver's substantial cent production during the early 1950s.
