Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under codes UVC-427 and DMR-018, the 1952-D Wheat Cent RPM-016 is a D/D South repunched mintmark in which a secondary D impression sits south of the primary mintmark. The southward ghost is resolvable at 5x magnification at the south edge of the mintmark ball and flag. The variety is documented across three die stages. Stage A (EDS) is unconfirmed pending additional specimens. Stage B is identified by a bold and specific obverse die marker: a long die gouge positioned next to the rim above the S of CENTS — an elongated raised line in the field that is conspicuous enough to serve as the primary attribution key for worn examples where mintmark displacement has softened. The three-stage progression underscores how working dies for cent production in the early 1950s were often carried to advanced die states before retirement, and Stage B's distinctive gouge marker allows collectors to place a given specimen within the die life timeline with reasonable confidence. The 1952-D cent was produced at Denver as the wheat reverse design entered its final years before the 1959 memorial reverse transition.
