1952-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-009

Description

Catalog markers UVC-419 and DMR-010 define this repunched mintmark variety on the 1952-D Lincoln Wheat Cent. A repunched mintmark occurs when the mintmark punch was applied to the working die more than once with at least one impression offset from the final position, leaving a secondary ghost impression visible beneath the primary letter. In early die production each mintmark was hand-punched individually, making such double impressions a recurring phenomenon across the Wheat Cent series. Three die stages are documented. Stage A presents both obverse and reverse in early die state (EDS), with the repunching cleanly visible. Stage B, mid-die state (MDS), introduces two diagnostic markers: a die crack running northeast from the D of V.D.B. on Lincoln's shoulder, and a die chip on the T of CENT on the reverse. The late die state Stage C remains unconfirmed, indicating the die may have been retired before full deterioration.
