1952-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with markers UVC-412 and DMR-003, the 1952-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-002 is a companion variety to RPM-009 from the same date and mintmark, each originating from a distinct working die with its own marker set and die life. Three stages are documented. Stage A presents both obverse and reverse as early-to-mid die state (EMDS), a transitional classification indicating the die had moved slightly beyond pristine EDS at the time of the earliest confirmed examples. Stage B is identified by a die crack on the forehead and mid-die state on the reverse. Stage C progresses to late die state on the obverse and a die chip on the T of CENT on the reverse. The EMDS starting point for Stage A suggests either that very early die state examples are unconfirmed, or the die was placed into service after initial preparation removed the sharpest EDS characteristics. Repunched mintmarks on Wheat Cents arise from the individual hand-punching of mintmarks onto each working die, with misalignment between the first and subsequent applications producing the secondary impression.
