Description

Sixth in the repunched mintmark census for the 1951-S Franklin half dollar, RPM-006 documents a triple-punched S mintmark with the notation S/S/S West, West — indicating two secondary S impressions displaced to the west (left) of the final mintmark position. The comments further note RDV-001a, identifying the specific reverse design variant paired with this obverse. John R. Sinnock's Franklin half dollar reverse positions the mintmark to the right of the Liberty Bell above the eagle, an area where hand-punched mintmark placement varied from die to die throughout the series' 1948-1963 production run. San Francisco struck approximately 13.7 million Franklin half dollars in 1951, a solid production figure that generated numerous working die pairs. Triple-punched mintmarks represent a more complex punching sequence than the standard double-punch repunching: the die sinker applied the S punch three times, with the first two impressions landing to the west of the final accepted position. Each successive punch strike drove the S deeper into the die steel while leaving vestiges of the earlier, displaced impressions visible as secondary shadows or outlines alongside the primary mintmark. The westward direction of both earlier punches suggests the die sinker consistently placed the punch too far to the left before making the final corrective impression. The RDV-001a designation connects this die to a documented reverse design variant, which provides an additional attribution checkpoint beyond the mintmark itself. Collectors should examine the S mintmark under 15-20x magnification, looking for secondary S outlines displaced to the left of the primary impression, with particular attention to the serif terminals where overlapping punch impressions are most clearly resolved.
