1951-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Recorded by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent documents the progressive flattening of a secondary mintmark alongside developing die scratches. Die markers UVC-402 / DMR-008 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with sharp secondary mintmark at LDS, die scratches north-south through mintmark and date, and reverse at LDS; Stage D with weak secondary mintmark at VLDS, obverse die scratches worn away, and die scratches north-south on reverse at VLDS. The transition from sharp to weak secondary mintmark between Stage C and D illustrates how continued striking flattened the displaced S impression. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1951-S had a relatively modest mintage as San Francisco Mint cent production was declining during the Korean War era.
