1951-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-015
Error
Description
Cataloged fifteenth among the Wexler Team's repunched mintmark varieties for the 1951-S Lincoln wheat cent, WRPM-015 records a secondary S impression visible alongside the primary mintmark — the product of hand-punching at the San Francisco Mint, where each working die received its S individually before entering the coining press. The 1951-S cent saw a mintage of approximately 136 million pieces, processed through numerous working dies over the production year and generating the inevitable positional inconsistencies that create RPM varieties. No cross-references to CONECA, Coppercoins, or other attribution systems are currently known for this variety, placing it among the RPMs documented exclusively through the Wexler cataloging effort. Hand-punched mintmark varieties span the era from the earliest branch mint operations through 1989, when the U.S. Mint transitioned to placing mintmarks directly on the master die, eliminating the die-by-die variation that had produced thousands of RPM varieties across every denomination. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 1951-S 1c WRPM-015.
