1951-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-010

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent carries the 10th cataloged repunched S mintmark for the 1951 date. Die markers UVC-409 / DMR-015 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with obverse and reverse at LDS; Stage D with a die crack from the bowtie south down the lapel at VLDS and reverse at VLDS. The bowtie-to-lapel die crack at VLDS documents terminal-stage structural fatigue running through Lincoln's garment details on the portrait. The four-stage progression from EDS through VLDS indicates this die pair remained in service far beyond the typical lifecycle. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1951-S had a mintage of approximately 136.0 million pieces during the early Korean War era.
