1951-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-009

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with identifiers UVC-408 and DMR-014, the 1951-S RPM-009 exhibits an S/S repunched mintmark displaced both north and south — an unusual bidirectional shift indicating the mintmark punch may have been repositioned multiple times, leaving traces of the secondary S visible both above and below the final placement. This north-south displacement pattern differs markedly from the rotational CCW shift found on the related RPM-011 for the same date, demonstrating how different die preparation events at the San Francisco Mint produced distinct RPM signatures even within the same production year. Three die stages are documented: Stage A at early die state (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B with obverse and reverse at MDS, and Stage C at late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). During 1951, San Francisco Mint engravers applied the S mintmark by hand-punching each working die individually, a process where the punch could shift in any direction between successive strikes. The bidirectional north-south displacement suggests either the punch bounced during a single hammer blow or the engraver made two separate correction attempts in opposite directions. The Lincoln Wheat Cent of 1951 was struck in the standard bronze alloy of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Victor David Brenner's iconic Lincoln portrait on the obverse paired with the wheat stalks reverse design that had served the denomination since its 1909 introduction. Collectors examining potential RPM-009 specimens should focus on the area immediately above and below the S mintmark for traces of the displaced secondary impression that defines this variety.
