1951-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Recorded by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent features bilateral die scratches appearing at EDS that progressively weaken through production. Die markers UVC-406 / DMR-012 track four stages: Stage A with die scratches north-south on obverse at EDS, die scratch in field along tie, and die scratches north-south on reverse at EDS; Stage B with obverse die scratches weak at EMDS and reverse die scratches weak at EMDS; Stage C with no die scratch in field along tie at MDS and reverse at MDS; Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). The tie-field scratch vanishing by Stage C while broader facial scratches merely weaken illustrates how finer surface marks are erased faster than coarser ones under striking pressure. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1951-S had a mintage of approximately 136.0 million pieces.
