1951-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent tracks progressive mintmark visibility reduction across four stages with a reverse die change between Stages C and D. Die markers UVC-398 / DMR-004: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with medium secondary mintmark at MDS, die scratches north from the first 1 of the date, and reverse at LDS; Stage C with weak secondary mintmark at LDS, weaker obverse die scratches, and reverse at VLDS. Then UVC-399 / DMR-005: Stage D with very weak secondary mintmark at VLDS, a die crack on 9 of the date, and the reverse die changed at LDS. The four-level mintmark attenuation from medium through weak to very weak provides a textbook example of how die wear progressively flattens displaced punch impressions. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm.
