Description

Holding the primary catalog position for the 1951-S date, this VarietyVista-documented San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent tracks four die stages across two reverse pairings with progressive mintmark attenuation. Die markers: UVC-396 / DMR-002 for Stages A-C and UVC-397 / DMR-003 for Stage D. Stage A with die scratches north-south on obverse at EDS, two die scratches from head under O of GOD, and die scratches north-south on reverse at MDS; Stage B with medium secondary mintmark at MDS and reverse at LDS; Stage C with weak secondary mintmark at LDS, a die crack on 9 of date, and a light die crack upper left wheat lines to rim at VLDS; Stage D with very weak secondary mintmark at VLDS and reverse die changed at LDS. The systematic attenuation from medium to weak to very weak documents die wear progressively flattening the displaced S impression. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm.
