1951 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Displaying a medium spread on all rim lettering, the 1951 Roosevelt Silver Dime DDR-001 is the principal doubled die reverse variety for this early date in the series that began in 1946. Doubled dies form during the hubbing process when a working die receives multiple impressions from the hub with slight misalignment between impressions, and the spread on rim lettering indicates the secondary hub impression shifted outward relative to the first, doubling the inscriptions nearest the rim. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-209 and DMR-004, this variety has been documented across three die stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B in mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C where the reverse reaches late die state while the obverse remains in early die state — an asymmetric wear pattern that suggests the reverse die deteriorated significantly faster than its paired obverse. The Roosevelt Dime, designed by John R. Sinnock and first struck in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was produced in 90% silver through 1964 before transitioning to copper-nickel clad composition. The 1951 Philadelphia Mint issue carries no mintmark, following the pre-1980 convention. DDR-001 as the primary doubled die reverse listing represents the most significant reverse doubling documented for this date, and the medium spread across all rim lettering makes it among the more visually prominent doubled dies in the early Roosevelt Dime catalog.
