Description

Documented across an unusually comprehensive four-stage die progression, the 1951 Franklin half dollar DDR-012 presents medium spread on the lower bell and clapper of John R. Sinnock's Liberty Bell reverse design. VarietyVista documented this variety under UVC-287 and DMR-015, recording an unusually comprehensive four-stage die progression: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), Stage C where the reverse has reached late die state with a die gouge appearing as a dot on the rear jaw line, and Stage D where both reverse and obverse surfaces have progressed to very late die state. The four-stage documentation — extending through VLDS — provides an exceptionally detailed record of this die's working life, tracking it from fresh surfaces through terminal deterioration. The die gouge dot appearing on the rear jaw line at Stage C offers a die-state-specific diagnostic: specimens showing this gouge but without the extreme wear of Stage D can be placed in the LDS range. The comments note RDV-001b, indicating this die utilized a specific reverse design variant — the same designation seen on several other 1951 Franklin half dollar DDRs — which can serve as an additional classification checkpoint.
