1951 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005
Error
Description
Strong spread South on the lower eagle and bell characterizes DDR-005 on the 1951 Franklin Half Dollar — a variety with an unusually rich four-stage die life documented under UVC-260 and DMR-008. Stage A represents Early Die State (unconfirmed). Stage B transitions to Mid-Die State with the reverse showing a light curved die scratch from the top of the first 1 in the date. Stage C advances to Late Die State with both reverse and obverse affected. Stage D reaches Very Late Die State (VLDS) with a die crack running down the right side of the bell striker through the D of DOLLAR to the rim, while the obverse also reaches VLDS. Four documented die stages — from EDS through VLDS — is exceptional and indicates this die saw extended production service, with the crack progression from Stage C to Stage D documenting the final deterioration before retirement. The reverse design variant is confirmed as RDV-001b. The Franklin Half Dollar reverse, featuring the Liberty Bell prominently, provides the bell and eagle design elements where the strong southward spread of DDR-005 is most readily apparent. The 1951 date produced approximately 16.8 million half dollars at Philadelphia in 90% silver composition. Cataloged by VarietyVista, the four-stage die life documentation makes DDR-005 particularly valuable for studying die deterioration progression and gives collectors multiple defined die states to collect, building a sequence showing the die's entire working history.
