Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B in MDS shows a strong die gouge on the left side of the second T of STATES and an obverse designated as ODV-006, and Stage C in LDS shows a die crack across the bust. Struck in 90% silver at the Denver Mint during the post-war boom era, the 1951-D Washington Quarter comes from the final period of circulating silver coinage before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended the practice. The ODV-006 obverse die variety designation on Stage B specimens indicates this reverse die was paired with a separately cataloged obverse variety, adding multi-variety interest to a single coin.
