1951-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-022

Description

Twenty-second in the documented sequence of repunched mint marks for the 1951-D Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, RPM-022 is cataloged by VarietyVista (UVC-381, DMR-028) and documents a repunched D mint mark where the punch was applied more than once into the working die. Three die stages have been recorded. Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state. Stage B advances to mid-die state with a die chip developing in the mint mark itself, along with the reverse progressing to mid-die state. Stage C is cataloged as late die state, though this remains unconfirmed. The die chip within the mint mark at Stage B is a particularly useful attribution marker, as it provides a secondary feature beyond the repunching itself. Victor David Brenner's bronze Lincoln Wheat Cent design was in its forty-third year of production in 1951, and Denver struck hundreds of millions of cents that year.
