Description

Recorded by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent tracks five progressive die states with notable diagnostic features including die clash evidence and reverse rust pits. Die markers UVC-380 / DMR-027: Stage A with a die scratch from 5 to last 1 of date at EDS and reverse at EDS; Stage B with a light die clash at throat at EMDS and numerous fine die scratches east-west on upper reverse at EMDS; Stage C with a very light die crack in hair at MDS, a die crack on forehead, and small rust pits on reverse at MDS; Stage D with obverse at LMDS and a die chip on T of CENT at LMDS; Stage E at LDS (unconfirmed). The rust pits on the reverse at Stage C document atmospheric corrosion attacking the die steel surface during production downtime. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, struck during the Korean War era.
