1951-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-014

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-014 features an evolving shoulder die crack tracked across five stages and two die pairings. Die markers UVC-369 / DMR-016: Stage A with obverse at EDS and reverse at LDS; Stage B with a light die scratch from 9 of date to tip of nose at EMDS and light die crack in left wheat lines to rim at VLDS. UVC-370 / DMR-017: Stage C with a light north-south S-curve die crack on the shoulder at MDS and reverse die changed at EDS; Stage D with medium die crack on shoulder at LDS and reverse at LMDS; Stage E with heavy die crack on shoulder at VLDS and die chip on T of CENT at LDS. The shoulder crack's progression from light to medium to heavy across Stages C through E provides an ideal case study in die fatigue accumulation at a stress concentration point. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, struck at Denver in 1951.
