1951-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-013

Description

Carrying attribution codes UVC-368 and DMR-015, this 1951-D Lincoln Wheat Cent repunched mintmark is among the later-numbered documented RPMs for this date. Three die stages are recorded. Stage A: early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B, the early-to-middle die state: three die scratches appear in the fold of the shoulder on the obverse — a tight cluster in Lincoln's drapery fold that serves as a reliable early-stage marker — with the reverse also entering early-to-middle die state. Stage C, the late die state: the obverse ages to LDS while a die chip develops on the T of CENT on the reverse. The die chip on CENT at Stage C is among the more precise late-stage diagnostics for this variety, its specific location confirming attribution even when the repunch itself has faded. Repunched mintmarks on 1950s Lincoln Wheat Cents are consistently popular with systematic collectors of the series. The 1951-D cent was struck in bronze at Denver with a mintage that, while not small, does not reach the extraordinary volumes of some mid-century issues.
