Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-361 / DMR-008, the 1951-D RPM-007 Lincoln wheat cent exhibits a D mint mark punched three times with an eastward displacement, classified as D/D/D East, Serifs. The serifs notation indicates that vestiges of the secondary and tertiary punches are visible at the serif points of the D, providing fine-detail diagnostics under high magnification. Three die stages document the progression of this die's working life. In Stage A, both obverse and reverse are in early die state. Stage B shows a die crack developing northeast across Lincoln's shoulder at mid-die state while the reverse also reaches mid-die state. By Stage C, die clash marks appear at the throat and behind the neck in late die state, with a light die crack forming on the forehead, and the reverse reaching late die state as well. The triple-punched D with eastward displacement represents a more complex repunching event than the typical single repunch, as the die setter made at least two corrective attempts before achieving the desired mint mark placement.
