Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent progresses through five die stages including a known off-center strike at Stage D. Die markers UVC-358 / DMR-005: Stage A with obverse and reverse at EDS; Stage B with a die crack over V.D.B. at MDS and reverse at MDS; Stage C with a die crack from 9 to 5 of date, die break at tip of 9, low fill die chip in upper 9, and reverse at LDS; Stage D with a die chip in upper 9 of date at VLDS, reverse at VLDS, and known on an off-center strike; Stage E with a larger die break at the tip of 9 and reverse at VLDS. The existence of an off-center strike at Stage D documents that this die pair experienced both mintmark displacement and striking alignment anomalies. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the evolving damage to the numeral 9 provides a progressive attribution timeline across all five stages.
