1951-D Over Mint Mark OMM-002

Description

Among the most recognized over mintmark varieties in the Lincoln wheat cent series, this 1951-D OMM-002 displays a D punched over an S mintmark, with the secondary S visible to the south. Cross-referenced as FS-512 and cataloged under UVC-395 and DMR-042, it progresses through three die states. Stage A shows a strong secondary mintmark with both sides in early die state. By Stage B the secondary mintmark weakens to medium visibility. Stage C in late die state shows only a faint remnant of the S at the bottom of the D, accompanied by a die crack over the V.D.B. initials. The D/S combination occurred when a die initially prepared for San Francisco was repunched with a Denver mintmark, creating one of the more prominent OMM varieties cherrypickers seek in 1950s wheat cent rolls. Early die state examples with the strongest secondary S command the greatest collector interest.
