1950-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Repunched mintmark variety on the 1950 San Francisco Washington Quarter, catalogued by VarietyVista as RPM-002. The 1950-S Washington Quarter is struck in 90% silver and represents one of the more collected dates in the silver quarter series. Die marker codes UVC-0741 and DMR-007 are assigned. Stage A is early die state (EDS, unconfirmed). Stage B is middle die state (MDS, unconfirmed). Stage C is late die state (LDS) and is identified by two progressive die failures: a die crack down the eagle's right wing, and a die crack across the forehead and hair of Washington's portrait. These Stage C markers are typical of exhausted Washington Quarter dies and appear consistently across multiple RPM and DDO varieties from the 1950s silver quarter series. Repunched mintmarks on Washington Quarters from this era result from the hand-punching of the S mintmark below Washington's neck ribbon on the obverse.
