1950-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-028
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1950-D 1¢ WRPM-028, this Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a D/D Tilted (Rotated) repunched mintmark and carries the significant distinction of having its reverse also cataloged as a separate variety — the reverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1950-D 1¢ WDDR-001, with doubling visible on the entire right wheat stalk. Obverse die markers include a die crack running down the 9 in the date, die cracks on the forehead forming a triangle, and a die crack running east-west through the hair on the upper head. Reverse markers include a die scratch running north-south in the field to the right edge of the T in CENT and a die scratch running northeast from the lower inside of the C in CENT. This RPM/DDR combination makes the variety doubly collectible, as both the repunched mintmark on the obverse and the doubled wheat stalk on the reverse represent independent die manufacturing anomalies. The 1950-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in the standard bronze alloy of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait and the wheat ears reverse were in their 42nd year of production. The triangle pattern formed by die cracks on Lincoln's forehead is a particularly distinctive die marker because its geometric shape is immediately recognizable under magnification, providing a rapid visual confirmation that the specimen is from this specific die pair. The convergence of RPM and DDR on a single die pairing from the Denver Mint illustrates how independent manufacturing events — mintmark punching and hub doubling — could both affect the same production unit.
