1950-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-336 and DMR-004, the 1950-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-003 has an interesting attribution history: based on re-examination of a mid-die-state specimen, the repunching direction was revised to D/Horizontal D — meaning the secondary mintmark impression is rotated approximately 90 degrees relative to the primary D, rather than showing a simple north/south or east/west displacement. This horizontal-relative-to-primary orientation is a less common RPM configuration, making RPM-003 an analytically interesting piece beyond its basic repunching appeal. The variety progresses through three die stages: Stage A (EDS) is unconfirmed pending additional specimens, Stage B (LMDS) is documented, and Stage C (LDS) is documented. The 1950-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint; the D mintmark appears on the obverse below the date. Variety seekers should examine the mintmark under 5x–10x magnification for the horizontal secondary D impression, which is most visible on Stage B examples before progressive die polishing reduces the contrast between primary and secondary impressions.
