Description

The 1949-S Roosevelt dime RPM-001 documents a triply punched mintmark — S/S/S West, West — in which the S punch was applied to the working die at least three times, each subsequent impression displaced westward from the previous. This makes it one of the more dramatic repunched mintmark varieties on an early silver Roosevelt dime and accounts for its RPM-001 designation for this date. VarietyVista codes UVC-187 and DMR-002 document the die. Stage A (EDS) is unconfirmed; Stage B records both reverse and obverse in confirmed MDS. Stage C is the best-evidenced state: the reverse is confirmed LDS, and a die crack along the edge of the upper back hairline on the obverse confirms late-die use as an additional marker. The 1949-S Roosevelt dime was struck in 90% silver at San Francisco, a date in which all three mints produced dimes with readily available mintmark evidence. Triple repunching produces a layered shadow around the final mintmark that experienced cherrypickers recognize under magnification. Collectors pursuing early silver Roosevelt dime RPM varieties often find RPM-001 the most heavily documented listing for major mintmark dates.
