A half dollar from the San Francisco Mint, the 1949 (S) Franklin Half Dollar belongs to the Franklin Half Dollars 1948-1963 series. With a mintage of 3.7 million, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 28% of total production. The obverse features Benjamin Franklin facing right and the reverse displays the Liberty Bell. The 1949-S is a semi-key date with a lower mintage. Three mints struck halves: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins.
