Notable for its extended four-stage die life culminating in a Very Late Die State forehead crack, this VarietyVista-documented 1949-D Lincoln Wheat Cent shows a D/D/D North, South triple-punched mintmark with opposing directional shifts. Die markers UVC-314 / DMR-003: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with obverse and reverse at LDS; Stage D with a light die crack on forehead at VLDS and reverse at VLDS. The VLDS designation documents a die pair used well beyond typical service limits, with the forehead crack confirming advanced structural fatigue. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, struck at the Denver Mint. The triple D/D/D pattern with north and south displacements documents at least three punch applications with corrections attempted in both directions before the final position was established.
