1949-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-035

Description

Economic contraction in 1949 brought the first postwar recession to the United States, and while Denver's cent production dipped compared to the boom years of 1946-1948, the 1949-D Lincoln Wheat Cent still yielded a substantial body of die varieties — WRPM-035 among them. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1949-D 1¢ WRPM-035, this variety records a working die on which the D mint mark was struck at least twice, producing the overlapping impressions that define a repunched mint mark. The 1949-D has at least forty-one documented RPMs in the Wexler catalog, indicating that despite the economic slowdown, Denver still consumed enough working dies to generate a dense population of repunching events. Coins from 1949 tend to be slightly scarcer in high grades than their 1947-1948 counterparts, partly due to heavy circulation during the Korean War era that followed — a period when consumer spending resumed and small change moved through commerce rapidly. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler system are published. The 1949-D represents the tail end of the late 1940s RPM-dense cluster that makes this era a focal point for Lincoln Cent die variety research.
